Problem 34.112

NEED HELP WITH PART C!!!

The Galilean Telescope. The following figure is a diagram of a Galilean telescope, or opera glass, with both the object and its final image at infinity. The image I serves as a virtual object for the eyepiece. The final image is virtual and erect.(Figure 1)

Part A

Find the angular magnification M.

Express your answer in terms of the variables f1 and f2.

ANSWER: -f1/f2

Part B

A Galilean telescope is constructed from two lenses, the 95.0-cm lens being used as the objective. What focal length should the eyepiece have if this telescope is to have the magnitude of angular magnification 6.33?

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

ANSWER: f2= -15.0 cm

Part C

A telescope is constructed from two lenses, the 95.0-cm lens being used as the objective. Both the object being viewed and the final image are at infinity. Compare the lengths of this and Galilean telescopes.

L/L_Gal =______? THE ANSWER IS NOT (95-15=80)

Explanation / Answer

the length of this telescope is L = f1 + f2 = 95 + 15 = 110 cm

the length of the Galilean telescope L_Gal = f1 - f2 = 95 - 15 = 80 cm.

so L / L_Gal = 110/80 = 1.375 cm.

Magnifications for the both are same. For the second telescope a convex lens is used. For the Galilean telescope concave lens is used.
