Question
A bowl of water has a flat base of area A = 20.7 cm2 and rests on a table. The height of the water is h = 10.5 cm, the weight of the water is 5.00 N, and the weight of the bowl is negligible (see figure below).
(a) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact with it. (Consider the water directly above the base of the bowl.)
(b) Find the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table.
(c) If the base of the bowl is in equilibrium, why are the answers to (a) and (b) not the same?

Explanation / Answer
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the water in contact
F = PA = rho ghA = 1000( 9.8) (0.105 m) ( 20.7 * 10 ^-4 m^2)=2.13 N
the force exerted on the base of the bowl by the surface of the table is normal force
N = mg = weight of the water = 5 N
(c)
the force acting on upper surface of water is not same as lower surface because total force exerted on any part of the bowl is transfered to one place to another place
