Question

A 64 kg skateboarder is moving along a horizontal surface at 11 m/s when she comes to the bottom of an incline. If she coasts up the incline, how high will she go?

a) 6.2 m

b) 36 m

c) 5.5 m

d) 12.4 m

e) 72 m

I think the answer is a) because looking at it from a conservation of energy standpoint, the only energy in the initial situation is kinetic energy (amounting to 3872J) if the zero point is set at the height of the surface. In the final situation, she will only have gravitational potential energy (mgh). Is this correct?

Explanation / Answer

yes you are correct

K.E = 1/2 mv2 = 1/2 x 64x 112 = 3872J = 64x 9.8 xh

h = 3872/ (64x9.8) = 6.17 m or 6.2 m
