Question
A circular wine barrel 75 cm in diameter will burst if the net upward force exerted on the top of the barrel is 6430 N. A tube 0.8 cm in diameter extends into the barrel through a hole in the top, as indicated in the figure below. Initially, the barrel is filled to the top and the tube is empty above that level. What weight of water must be poured into the tube in order to burst the barrel?
0.732 N = answer
I'm trying to figure out how they got this answer on the practice version for my similar problem. My answers are much larger.
My problem:
A circular wine barrel 75 cm in diameter will burst if the net upward force exerted on the top of the barrel is 6990 N. A tube 0.8 cm in diameter extends into the barrel through a hole in the top, as indicated in the figure below. Initially, the barrel is filled to the top and the tube is empty above that level. What weight of water must be poured into the tube in order to burst the barrel?
Thanks!
Explanation / Answer
diameter of circular wine barrel=0. 75 m
net upward force,F= 6990 N.
diameter of tube =0.008 m
We know that the pressure,P=F/A
F=force
A=area
From barallel the pressure , p=6990/0.752=12426.67 N/m2
(from the tube) p=F2/0.000064m2
Equating the two,12426.67 N/m2=F2/0.000064m2
F2=0.795 N
