In this problem, we will consider an idealized Carnot heat engine. The hot reservoir, from which it absorbs heat, consists of a large amount of boiling water. The cold reservoir, into which it emits heat, is a large container which has both ice and water. When the machine is run for 5 minutes, the heat it emits melts  5.90×102 kg of ice in the cold reservoir. (We assume there is sufficient ice in the cold reservoir.) Throughout this problem use Lf=3.34×105J/kg for the heat of fusion for water.

W is performed by the engine? I got 19706 but it says wrong please help!

Th = 100 C = 100 + 273 = 373 K

Tc = 0C = 0 + 273 = 273 K

efficiency, n = 1 - Tc/Th

= 1 - 273/373

= 0.268

heat rejected to cold reservoir in 5 minutes, Qout = m*Lf

= 5.9*10^-2*3.34*10^5

= 19706 J

let Qin heat taken by the engine from hot reservoi during this time.

we know, n = 1 - Qiout/Qin

Qout/Qin = 1 - n

Qin = Qout/(1 - n)

Qin = 19706/(1 - 0.268)

= 26921 J

so, Workdone during this time, W = Qin - Qout

= 26921 - 19706
