Question

A neuron has the following characteristics at rest:

Vm = -65 mV                EK = -75 mV                 ENa = +55 mV               ECl = -45 mV

Action potential threshold = -55 mV

a) If the only GABA receptor expressed by the neuron were GABAAR, would you expect GABA to elicit an inward or outward current? Explain.

b) If the only GABA receptor expressed by the neuron were GABAAR, would GABA be excitatory or inhibitory? Explain.

c) If the only GABA receptor expressed by the neuron were GABABR, would GABA be excitatory or inhibitory? Explain.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 1

If gaba receptor activated it stimulate formation of many chloride ion channel so chloride ion enter into neuron from ECF So cause hyperpolarization and inhibit flow of impulse.

Ans2

Gaba is inhibitory because it cause opening of chloride ion channel and chloride cause hyperpolarisation that is Vm of -80 to -100 mv.

Ans3

If gaba b receptor activate it again cause inhibition of neuron by inhibiting adenyl cyclase .

Adenyl cyclase is an enzyme which required by each cell to convert ATP into CAMP and cause phosphorylation of some enzyme and start biological function.
