Question

Sam fields a baseball hit to him in the left field. He then throws the ball to third to force out the other base runner.Distance of the ball above ground = 1.8-m (above ground), vertical velocity=8 m/s, horizontal velocity=25m/s. Samreleases the ball, he is 41m from the third baseman, Charlie, and Mike is 13m from third base and running at 8m/stowards third.

a.) How high in the air does the ball go?

b.) How much time does it take for the ball to reach the third baseman?

c.) How high is the ball when it reaches the third baseman?

Explanation / Answer

a)

here by using the formula

Hmax = H0 + v^2/2*g

Hmax = 1.8 + 8^2 / 19.6 = 5.1 m

b)

speed = distance / time

t = d / v = 41 /25 = 1.64 sec

c)

by using the second equation of motion

h = H + v * t + 0.5 * a * t^2

h = 1.8 + 8 * 1.64 - 0.5 * 9.8 * 1.64^2

then by solving this we get

h = 1.7 m
