Question 1
Three resistors are set up as shown in the circuit diagram above. The resistors have resistances:
R1 = 6.4 ?
R2 = 3.1 ?
R3 = 5.2 ?
The circuit is powered by a battery with a voltage of 18.9 volts.
Assuming that the wires have negligible resistance what is the total resistance of the circuit?
RTotal = ________?

What current flows through resistor R1?
I1 = ________A

What is the voltage drop across the resistor R2?
V2 = ______ V
Question 4
Question text
What power is dissipated by the resistor R3?
P3 = _________ W
Explanation / Answer
a)
R2 and R3 are in parallel, their equivalent resistance be R'
R' = R2*R3 / (R2+R3)
= 3.1 * 5.2 / (3.1 + 5.2)
= 1.95 ohm
This R' is in series with R1
So,
Rtotal = R' + R1
= 1.95 + 6.4
= 8.35 ohm
Answer: 8.35 ohm
b)
Current through R1 is I net
I1 = Inet
= Vtotal / R total
= 18.9 / 8.35
= 2.26 A
c)
Voltage drop across R1,
V1 = I1*R1
=2.26*6.4
= 14.46 V
V2 = V-V1
= 18.9 - 14.46
= 4.44 V
d)
V3 = V2 = 4.44 V
P3= V3^2/R3
= (4.44)^2 / 5.2
= 3.79 W
