Question
Internet search company Google operates a fleet of cars known as "Google Street View car". Cars are equipped with 3 ft tall metal stand for the camera - see picture. At some point the car is traveling at 80 km/hr on the road where the earth's magnetic field is approximately 4.5 Times 10^-5 T. Why the movement of the car produces the potential difference between two ends of the metal camera stand. Which principle encapsulates the phenomenon. How large is the voltage induced between the roof of the car and the camera stand?Explanation / Answer
This is done due to motional emf as a rod moving in a magnetic field with a constant velocity the free electrons of the wire also move with this velocity together with the random velocity they have in the rod. The magnetic force due to the random velocity is zero on the average. Thus the magnetic field exerts an average force on each free elecron. An electrostatic field E is developed within the wire and this field exerts electrostatic force F=qE.
and charge keeps on accumulating until Fb=Fe.
hence magnetis force on the moving free electrons maintains the potential difference.
And this emf is produced due to the motion of a conductor.
emf E=Bvl=4.5*10-5*22.16*0.9144 v=80km/h=22.16m/s, l=3ft=0.9144m
E=9.1*10-4V. ans
