Question
A 4.00 kg object traveling westward at 25 0 m s hits 15.0 kg object at rest. The 4.00 kg object bounces eastward at 8.00 m/s. What is the speed and direction of the 15.0 kg object after the collision? A 0.00650 kg bullet is fired from a 4.00 kg gun with a velocity of 500 m/s south. What is the recoil velocity (give both the speed and direction) of the gun? A 62.0 kg child is sitting in a wagon full of bricks. The wagon and all of the bricks together have a mass of 150 kg. In order to move the wagon east without touching the ground, the child throws two bricks, each of mass 3.00 kg, westward at 2.00 m/s. What is the new velocity of the child, wagon, and remaining bricks?Explanation / Answer
1) Given,
m1 = 4 kg ; u1 = 25 m/s ; m2 = 15 kg ; u2 = 0
v1 = 8 m/s ; v2 =?
We need to find the velcoity of m2 after collision.
We know from conservation of linear momentum that,
Pi = Pf
m1 u1 + m2 u2 = m1 v1 + m2 v2
4 x 25 + 0 = 4 x (- 8) + 15 v2
v2 = (100 + 32)/15 = 8.8 m/s
Hence, v2 = 8.8 m/s towards the west.
