Question
A transparent photographic slide is placed in front of a converging lens with a focal length of 2.65 cm. An image of the slide is formed 13.4 cm from the slide.
(a) How far is the lens from the slide if the image is real? (Enter your answers from smallest to largest starting with the first answer blank. Enter NONE in any remaining answer blanks.)
_______cm
(b) How far is the lens from the slide if the image is virtual? (Enter your answers from smallest to largest starting with the first answer blank. Enter NONE in any remaining answer blanks.)

(b) How far is the lens from the slide if the image is virtual? (Enter your answers from smallest to largest starting with the first answer blank. Enter NONE in any remaining answer blanks.)
_______cm
_______cm
Explanation / Answer
: a) 1/f = 1/u + 1/v
1/2.65 – 1/13.4 = 1/u
1/u = 0.302 cm
u = 3.312 cm
b) 1/u = 1/f + 1/v (in this case v is negative and so becomes positive when taken to the other side of the equation)
Distances to a virtual image are negative:
1/u + 1/v = 1/f
1/u = 1/f - 1/v
1/u = 1/2.65 + 1/13.4
1/u = 0.451
u = 2.71 cm
