ANSWERS:

A) 750 kcal from fat is the personal daily value for fat based on this energy intake.

B) Based on the classic rule of thumb, 4 lbs would be the approximate weight gain of a person who consumes an excess of 500 kcalories daily for one month.

C) When an adult gains an extra 10 pounds of body weight, approximately 7.5 lbs of this weight is fat.

D) In an adult who gains 20 pounds of excess body weight, about 5 lbs of this is lean tissue.

Explanation / Answer

a) An athlete has a daily energy allowance of 2500 kcalories. Calculate the personal daily value for fat based on this energy intake? i.e. 750 kcal

Since the diet recomendation of energy from fat for an athelete is 30% of daily calories. So based on this fact if the daily allowance is 2500 kcal, the energy intake from fat will be 30% of 2500 which equals 750 kcal.

B) Based on the classic rule of thumb, 4 lbs would be the approximate weight gain of a person who consumes an excess of 500 kcalories daily for one month.

Based on the classic rule of thumb, the consumption of extra 3500kcal result in gaining 1 pound per week

so the total consumption for month will be 500 times 30 which equals 15000kcal

and the weight gain of a person who consumes an excess of 500 kcalories daily for one month will be 15000 divided by 3500 which equals 4.28 lbs

C) When an adult gains an extra 10 pounds of body weight, approximately 7.5 lbs of this weight is fat.

Well gaining and losing weight is generally counted upon the gain or loss of fat, Since fat can be a major contributor for gaining weight because it provides more calories per gram than any other nutrient. When we see on average fat contributes 75% of total weight gain however it can differ depending upon ur life style and consumption of calories.

so taking 75% into account in general terms if an adult gains 10 extra pounds means he consumes 35000 extra kcalories ( for gain of 1 pound of weight it takes 3500kcal) and 75% will be 26250 kcal which equals 7.5 pound gain in weight.

D) In an adult who gains 20 pounds of excess body weight, about 5 lbs of this is lean tissue.

The answer is pretty much same as C. If we take into account the 75% contibution of fat, the remaining 25% will be of lean tissue which equals 5 lbs. Carbohydrates being easy to digest contribute minimum in gaining the weight and are not stored.

Hope that will do
