Explanation / Answer

Here ,

q1 = 4.5 uC

q2 = -1.75 uC

d = 0.30 m

a) let the distance from the -1.75 uC charge is x

for net force on the third charges to be zero

net electric field must be zero

k * q1/(d + x)^2 - k * q2/x^2 = 0

4.5/(0.30 + x)^2 - 1.75/x^2 = 0

solving for x

x = 0.497 m

third charge should be placed 0.497 m right of -1.75 uC

b)

if both charges are positive

third charge must be placed in between the charges

for net force on the third charges to be zero

net electric field must be zero

k * q1/(d - x)^2 - k * q2/x^2 = 0

4.5/(0.30 - x)^2 - 1.75/x^2 = 0

solving for x

x = 0.115 m

third charge should be placed - 0.115 m right of the negative charge
