Question

Determine the direction of the force (if any) that will act on the charge in each of the following situations. A positive charge within an electric field that points downward. A negative charge within an electric field that points to the right. A positive charge moving to the right in a magnetic field that points into the screen. A negative charge moving downward in a magnetic field that points out of the screen. A positive charge moving to the left in an electric field that points out of the screen. A negative charge moving out of the screen in a magnetic field that points into the screen.

Explanation / Answer

On a positive charge , force by electric field acts in the direction of electric field. hence direction of force : Downward

On a negative charge , force by electric field acts in the opposite direction of electric field.

hence direction of force : Left

using right hand rule , direction of force comes out to be Upward

using right hand rule , direction of force comes out to be Rightward

direction of force = direction of electric field = outward

No force , since the negative charge moves parallel to the direction of magnetic field
