Question

Wire C and wire D are made from different materials and have length L_c = L_d = 1.0 m. The resistivity and diameter of wire C are 3.00 times 10^-6 ohm middot m and 2.10 mm, and those of wire D are 1.80 times 10^-6 ohm middot m and 0.50 mm. The wires are joined as shown in in the figure, and a current of 2.0 A is set up in them. What is the electric potential difference between points 1 and 2? What is the electric potential difference between points 2 and 3? What is the rate at which energy is dissipated between points 1 and 2? What is the rate at which energy is dissipated between points 2 and 3?

Explanation / Answer

we know that

resistance R = resistivity x L/A

therefore

Rc = resistivity x Lc/Ac

Rc = 2.72 ohm

Rd = 28.8 ohm

1)

V12 = i x Rc

V12 = 2x2.72 = 5.44 V

2)

V23 = i Rd

V23 = 57.6 Volts

3)

Pc = i^2 Rc

Pc = 10.88 W

4)

Pd = i^2 Rd

Pd = 115.2 W
