Question
Can a battleship float in a bathtub? (Of course, you have to imagine a very big bathtub or a very small battleship.) In either case, there is just a bit of water all around and under the ship. Specifically, suppose the ship weighs 100 tons and the water in the tub weighs 100 pounds. Explain your reasoning for the following questions:
a. Will the battleship float in the bathtub (as described) or touch the bottom? If so, why? If not, why not?
b. How would the total weight of a bathtub full to the brim with water compare to that of a bathtub full to the brim with water and a battleship floating in it (assuming that the latter is possible)? [3 points]
Explanation / Answer
a) it will touch the bottom
because the ship to float it should have enogh water to float
b)
weight of water in the bathtub with ship will be less than the tub with no ship
