Question

B.) Suppose the single-slit is replaced by two slits, where each slit has the same opening width as that found above. These two slits are separated by 2.29 x 10-3 m.

How many bright interference fringes appear in delta x (the distance given above in previous part)? Hint: You do not need to use your answer to question #1 in this solution.

Laser light of wavelength 583 nm is incident upon a single slit. 10-3 m. The figure shows the pattern observed on a screen located 3.0 m from the slit. Note the distance delta x is 8.48x

Explanation / Answer

A) For single slit experiment,

d sin theta = n Lambda

d *8.48*10^-3 / 3 = 1*583*10^-9

d = 583*10^-9 *3/8.48*10^-3

=0.00020625 m

width d = 2.06 *10^-4 m

B) y = m lambda D/d

m = yd/[D lambda]

= (8.48*10^-3 /2)*2.29 x 10^-3 /[3*583*10^-9] = 5.5

so m = 5

total number of bright fringes are 5 on either side of central maxima + 1 in center

total number of bright fringes =5+5+1 = 11
