Question

The inner endocardium is a thin serous a seooth shiny surface lining the intenal walls of he heart walls and observe that the tef Word Origins The bicuspld valve is often referred to as the mitral valve. That is because when it is closed, the cusps resemble a miter a tall, pointed headdress worn by bishops and other membens of the clergy Semilunar means "half moon. The name refers to the half-moon shape of the cusps in the semilunar valves. MAKING CONNECTIONS A ventricular septal defect, one of the most common congenital heart defects, refers to one or more holes in the septum. Blood pressure in the left ventricle is higher than in the right ventricle. How will this condition affect the normal flow of blood through the heart?

Explanation / Answer

Normally, oxygen-poor(blue) blood returns to the right atrium from the body, travels to the right ventricle, then is pumped into the lungs, where it recieves oxygen. On the other hand, oxygen-rich (red) blood returns to the left atrium from the lungs, passes into the left ventricle, and then is pumped out to the body through the aorta.

A Ventricular Septal Defect(VSD) refers to one or more holes in interventricular septum. It allows oxygen-rich (red) blood to pass from the left ventricle, through the VSD, and mixed with the oxygen-poor(blue) blood of the right ventricle. It happens because the pressure of left ventricle is higher than the right ventricle normally and blood flows from the high pressure area are to low pressure area.

When blood passes through the VSD from left to right ventricle, a larger volume of blood must be handeled by the right side of the heart and thus extra amount of blood passes through the pulmonary artery into the lungs. It causes higher pressure into the blood vessels present in lung's alveolus (air bags). Continuation of this high pressure for a long time causes lung disease. As the size and the numbers of the openings of VSD increases ,the volume of blood flow also increases.

As pressure builds up in the lungs, blood flow through VSD from left to right ventricle and on to the lungs will diminish. This helps to preserve the lungs function but yet another serious problem occurs. Blood flow within the heart goes from the areas with high pressure to the areas with low pressure. If a VSD is not repaired by surgery, then the lung disease beings to occur, and the pressure in the right side of the heart will eventually exceed the pressure of the left side of the heart. And when it happens, oxygen-poor (blue) blood flow from the right ventricle , through the VSD, into the left ventricle and on to the body. Thus, body does not recieve enough oxygen into the blood-stream to meet its need.
