Question

A. An electron moves upward in a region of space where there is a magnetic field of 0.2T and an electric field of 1000 N/C, both directed “into the page”. The electron’s velocity is 10^7 m/s. If there is a magnetic force on the electron, tell me the direction and magnitude of the magnetic force, and if there is an electric force on the electron, tell me the magnitude and direction of the electric force. Please show work. B)A proton sits at rest a region of space where there is a magnetic field and electric field, both directed upward. If there is a magnetic force on the proton, tell me its direction, and if there is an electric force on the proton, tell me its direction. You don’t need to tell me anything about the forces’ magnitudes.

Explanation / Answer

A) Magnetic force, Fm = q(v x B) = (-1.6 * 10-19)[107j x (-0.2k)] = (3.2 * 1013 N)i

So, the magnetic force acts to the right.

Electric force, Fe = qE = (-1.6 * 10-19)(-1000k) = (1.6 * 10-16 N)k

So, the electric force acts out of the page.

B) Magnetic force is zero since the particle's speed is zero.

Electric force acts in the direction of electric field i.e. upward since proton's charge is positive.
