Question

A 9 800-N shark is supported by a rope attached to a 4.20-m rod that can pivot at the base

(a) Calculate the tension in the cable between the rod and the wall, assuming the cable is holding the system in the position shown in the figure. (Give you answer to three significant digits.)

(b) Find the horizontal force exerted on the base of the rod. Whats the magnitude? And is the direction to the left or right?

(c) Find the vertical force exerted on the base of the rod. Ignore the weight of the rod. Whats the magnitude? And is the direction upwards or downwards?

Explanation / Answer

as the system is in equilibrium, net force and net torque acting on the system must be zero.

a) Let T is the tension in the string.

Apply net torque about pivot = 0

9800*4.2*sin(30) - T*4.2*sin(80) = 0

T = 9800*4.2*sin(30)/(4.2*sin(80))

= 4976 N

b) Let Fx and Fy are component of forces exerted by hinge.

Apply, Fnetx = 0

Fx - T*cos(20) = 0

Fx = T*cos(20)

= 4976*cos(20)

= 4676 N

c) Apply, Fnety = 0

Fy + T*sin(20) - 9800 = 0

Fy = 9800 - T*sin(20)

= 9800 - 4976*sin(20)

= 8098 N
