Question

Sensory Deprivation Exercise

I would like you to experience what it is like for people (particularly the elderly) to lose some of their sensory ability. This is a sensory deprivation exercise and, if at all possible, please try to have someone help you with it. Also please be careful of the things you do while doing this exercise as your senses will not be as sharp as they normally are. DO NOT ENGAGE IN ACTVITIES THAT PUT YOU OR OTHERS AT RISK (e.g., DRIVING).

To alter your senses.....

Hearing: Place cotton balls in your ears to muffle sounds or wear noise cancelling headphones if you have them.

Vision: Place translucent plastic over some goggles (or glasses if you wear them) and secure with rubber bands or tape. Or look through a piece of translucent plastic.

Touch: Put on rubber or thin material gloves.

You can do one sense at a time if you are alone so that you have your other senses to help you. If you have a helper, do all the senses at the same time to get a perspective of what it is like to be elderly.

Now try to do some everyday activities like reading or watching TV. Try picking up eating utensils with the gloves on.

The assignment is to describe what the experience is like. What are your thoughts about your senses being altered? What are some of your feelings about it?

For maximum points, try to reflect a little on how your experience might differ from that of the elderly.

Explanation / Answer

For Hearing: Place cotton balls in your ears to muffle sounds or wear noise cancelling headphones if you have them.

Keeping Cottob balls in ears has the sensation of being uncomfortable first. Watching TV was not that easy as i was not able to hear on average volume which i used to hear at first. Need to increase the volume of TV to get clear Idea of what actually they are speaking. Some sort of noise insdie the ears..Gmm... which was not easy to take, and it was really difficult to speak to others s their voice was not audiable. And i was shouting at them. Some Noises particular with lesser db were not able to ge through the barrier and reach the ear drum.

For Vision: Place translucent plastic over some goggles (or glasses if you wear them) and secure with rubber bands or tape. Or look through a piece of translucent plastic.

After placing the transperent tape infront of my eyes and tried to watch something it was not a easy task. Beacuase everything was so blurr and some things gave various colours from them which they were not actually. When i tried to watch our FULL HD TV of 1080p it was like watching 480p video on the screen

For Touch: Put on rubber or thin material gloves.

This was the funnies part as i was not knowing whether i am touching the mouse pad of my laptop or not ..after wearing gloves. And also bit harder to detect cool and hot things as my skin was not in direct contact with surfaces of what i am touching.it was like i have lost the sense of my hand to some extent.
