Question
Will a magnet attract any metallic object, or only those made of iron? Why is this so? 2) Two iron bars attract each other no matter which ends are placed close together. Are both magnets? Explain. 3) Suppose you have three iron rods, two of which are magnetized but the third is not. How would you determine which two are the magnets without using any additional objects? 4) A horseshoe magnet is held vertically with the north pole on the left and the south pole on the right. A wire passing perpendicularly between the poles carries a current directly away from you. In which direction is the force on the wire?Explanation / Answer
(1) Iron is not the only metal that a magnet will attract.magnet will attract any metal which is paramagnetic or ferromagnetic. so any electron with unpaired electrons will be attracted by the magnet.
(2)No, they're not both magnets. If both bars were magnets, then each bar would have a "North pole" and a "South pole", and if you tried to put the two North poles together or the two South poles together, they would repel each other rather than being attracted to each other.
If the two bars attract no matter which ends you put together, then one of them is a magnet and the other is just an unmagnetized bar of iron
(3)there are two ways to check it
(a)Put the different ends of the rods together . Keep switching ends - you will get attraction until two poles repel. These are the two magnets
(b) Suspend the rods freely one by one by means of a thread tied at its centre. That which will always
pont in a N-S direction is a magnet. The remaing one which points in any direction is iron rod.
(4)The force on the wire is in the downward direction. Use the right hand rule
Magnetic field lines external to the magnet come out of the magnet's north pole, and enter the south pole, thus the magnetic field points right
