Question
Nursery with Camellia problem A local nursery calls you to come look at their camellia plants because the leaves have large dead spots on them. They said that plants were supplied from a wholesale nursery in California about 2 months ago. The plants looked good for the first month or so and began to look worse in the last several weeks. The nursery has been a good supplier and all the other types of plants that came with that shipment look good. They have used a standard fertilization and watering scheme. (1) When you go to the nursery for the first time what will you look for in diagnosing the problem? (2) What steps will you need to go through to prove what is causing (4) What control measures would you recommend for the nursery? Using information from your notes and additional suitable sources, list 2- the problem? (3) What type of pathogen would most likely cause the disease? 3 possible pathogens (Specify genus) that could be causing the problem and management strategies for control of each one. Select the most likely pathogen and management scheme. Write a brief (1 page maximum) report which answers the 4 questions listed above. Make sure to list the sources you used. If you copy information from the internet or other source, write it in quotations and cite the references you used. Come to the next lab prepared to defend your choice. In groups, you will select the most likely pathogen and appropriate control measures and as a group present the choice to the class. This activity is worth 10 pts. Full points will be given for the write up strategies, and participating in the group choice. described above with logical pathogen choices and feasible managementExplanation / Answer
1.When we go to the nursery and select a particular plant ,few points are required to keep in mind
2.The physical appearances and internal damage should be checked to the plants that are affected. The underdevelopment and overdevelopment of tissues and organs to be observed like malformation of leaves, stems, rootsetc.Isolation of plant pathogens like bacteria or viruses by growing the tissue and isolating the pure culture. Microbiological tests can be done to prove the type of organism that has affected the plant by plating techniques in nutrient agar media.
3.As per the description given camilla leaves have dead spots on them which can be of any colour ,it would have been better if the color of the spots were described, but still the dead spots clearly indicates the growth of the fungi as it could be one of the leaf blight fungi or camellia gall disease.
