Question
James is at comic-con which is taking place on the second floor of the LA convention center. As an irrationally big Spider-man fan, James buys as much Spider-man merchandise as he can carry, but when James gets to the elevator which takes him to the ground floor, he finds to his great dismay that the merchandise feels significantly lighter, and he chastises himself for not buying more memorabilia. If the elevator had a downward acceleration having magnitude g/3, how much memorabilia could James have been ok holding in the elevator in comparison to the amount he could hold in the convention room?
Explanation / Answer
The feel of lightness or heavyness is the rection from the surfce on which you rest.
when the surface is at rest the reaction of the surface is mg
when in lift moving down with an acceleration of g/3, the rection of the surface below
= m(g-g/3) = 2mg/3
to feel th esme experience as in convention center (rest) we can more mass m/3
so that the total rection of the lift floor = (3m/2)*(2g/3) = mg
he can carry 3/2 times of present weight or 50% more.
