Question
The next problems refer to this figure: a metal rod is sliding along a U shaped conducting track. There is a uniform magnetic field which points OUT OF the page If the metal rod is moving at a constant speed down the page (as shown), then the current-flowing through the metal rod has magnitude and direction: In the figure above, suppose v=10.0 m/s, B=1.0 T, the width of the metal rod is d=2.0 m. and the rod is a distance h = 5.0 m from the end of the track, as shown. The rod has resistance 4.0 Ohm. and the track may be considered "resistance-less". What is the magnitude of the maximum current flowing through the rod?Explanation / Answer
6. We use equation.
F = q*(v x B)
So for directions only we right
F = -(-j x k) = -(-i ) = i
Thus the force on electrons to the positive x axis, which shifts electron to the positive x axis. hence current in the rod will be steady to the left.
7. I = e/R = (Bdv)/R = (1.0*2.0*10)/4.0 = 5A
