Question
Laser light of wavelength 583 nm is incident upon a single slit. The figure shows the pattern observed on a screen located 3.0 m from the slit. Note the distance delta x is 8.48 x 10-3 m.
a) How wide is the opening of the slit?
b) Suppose the single-slit is replaced by two slits, where each slit has the same opening width as that found above. These two slits are separated by 2.29 x 10-3 m.
How many bright interference fringes appear in delta x (the distance given above in previous part)? Hint: You do not need to use your answer to question #1 in this solution.
Explanation / Answer
a) width of central bright fringe = lambda * D / d
8.48 x 10^-3 = (583 x 10^-9 x 3 ) / (d)
d = 2.06 x 10^-4 m
b) for double slit, bright fringe
x = m * lambda * D / d
distance of mth bright fringe from centre on both side.
(8.48 x 10^-3 ) /2 = n * 583 * 10^-9 / (2.06 * 10^-4)
n = 1.5
so there will be 3 bnright fringe ( n = -1, 0 , 1)
