Question
The graph on the right represents data collected to determine to effect of temperature on enzyme reaction rate. Using the graph and the information discussed in lecture on enzyme-mediated reactions, explain data presented in the graph. 3. (17) 10.00 T 9.00 t 8.00 t 7.00t e 6.00 -Reaction Rate 5.00 C 4.00 3.00 2.00 1.00 025 40 S0100 Temperature Helpful Hints: Use the temperatures as reference points Relate energy and temperature The graph has 3 distinct parts, explain the molecular reason for each part. Reaction rate scale has no units. Do not reference reaction rate data points in your explanation.Explanation / Answer
The data in the graph about the enzyme – mediated reaction shows the effect of increase in temperature on enzyme reaction rate.
As the temperature increases from 0 to 40 , there is a dramatic increase in the reaction rate, but further increment till 50 leads to a slight fall in the reaction rate, where as there is a drastic fall in the reaction rate when the temperature is still increased from 50 to 100.
This means that initially till 40 the increase in temperature has a positive effect on the reaction rate, but in contrast to this trend, the reaction rate plummets when the temperature is still increased from 40 to 100.
In the first part the energy acquired by the molecules due to increase in temperature leads to increase in the reaction rate.
Further increase in temperature from 40 to 50 shows negative effect on the reaction rate with a sharp fall in the reaction rate.
Finally the reaction rate further plummets to zero in the final phase of increasing the temperature from 50 to 100 because the molecules get so much energy that their bonds break and they get denatured.
