Question
Open-Response Homework Problem 15.1 An optical instrument is built from a diverging lens (lens 1) with focal length ?15cm and a converging lens (lens 2) with focal length 25cm. The lenses are place 20cm apart. An object is placed 10cm from lens 1.
(a)Compute the final image location of the instrument. Report a distance from lens 2 with the correct sign.
(b)Compute the total magnification of the instrument.
(c)Describe the final image of the instrument. Support your description.
Open-Response Homework Problem 15.3 A large aquarium is formed of a round tank filled with water. The tank has spherical windows around its outside. The windows have a radius of curvature of magnitude |10ft|. An observer watches a fish that is 5ft from the vertex of the spherical window. The index of refraction of water is 4/3.
(a)Where does the fish appear to be to the observer? Draw the optical co- ordinate axis. Show the positive direction on the axis and report an image distance with the correct sign.
(b)What is the magnification of the fish?Now the observer looks across the aquar- ium through a second spherical window at his daughter (called Kat). Kat is 15ft from the window. The distance between the ver- tices of the two windows is 50ft.
(c)Where does Kat appear to be? Report an image distance with the cor- rect sign from the vertex of the window the observer is looking through. Draw both op- tical axes required to solve the problem and locate important locations on both.
Kat 15ft window 1 Aquarium 50ft fish 5ft window 2 observerExplanation / Answer
Using the lens formula twice for the system
V = f * u /f + u
v = -15 * -10/-25 = 6 cm
THen
V = f * u /f + u
V = (-20 +6) * 25 / 25-14 = - 31.81 cm
Total magnification
M = 6/10 * 31.81/14 = 1.36
The final image of the instrument is virtual and inside the instrument
