Question
Two speakers are positioned 5.00 m apart against a wall. An observer standing 8.00 m away from the wall and midway between the speakers is at a location of constructive interference. (a) Can the person walk forward from the point and encounter a point of destructive interference? Why? (b) By moving 0.54 m to one side of his original position, the observer experiences the first location of destructive interference. What is the frequency of the sound emitted by the speakers? Pleae show all work, any formulas used, and expalain.
0.54m IExplanation / Answer
1. Not sure about first one
Since the phase of the speakers are opposite, then destructive interference occurs when the separation distance is 0, , 2, .....
and constructive interference occurs when the separation distance is /2, 3/2, 5/2
When the listener moves the distance to one speaker is sqrt(8^2 + (2.5-.54)^2) = 8.24m
and the distance to the other is sqrt(8^2 + (2.5+.54)^2) = 8.56m
So the separation distance is 8.56-8.24 = 0.34m
Therefore = 2*0.34m = 0.68m
Since v = f then f = v/ = 343m/s/0.68m = 504Hz
