Question
Thaetaon Higher Educator Figure 5A In Figure 5A above, in which direction is the induced current in the resistor R when the switch S is first closed?. Assume the switch in Figure 5A above has been closed for some long time and remains closed. Is there an induced current in the resistor R? Briefly explain why or why not. Assume the switch in Figure 5A above has been closed for some long time. In which direction is the induced current in the resistor R when the switch S is first re-opened a) b) c) Figure 5B igure 5EBExplanation / Answer
a) Due to the current flow in the primary circuit the magnetic field produced to the right. so to oppose this field the induced feld should be towards left. The current should flow from right to left in the secondary coil.
b) When the switch is closed for a long time the change in magnetic flux is zero so induced current in the secondary circuit is zero.
c) If the switch is reopened then to oppose the decrease in magnetic field in the primary coil the induced current in the second would be from left to right.
d) The field produced due to the current carrying conductor is into the page. When the magnetic field is into the page and metal plate is moving to the right then the top end of the metal rod becomes positive and the bottom end negative (check with Right hand rule).
