Question
With the help of the rope,you want to drag a dresser for a distance of 10.0 meters.The total weight of the dresser is equal to 1470N. You hold the rope at an angle of 30 degrees above the horizontal and pull it so that the tension force in the rope is equal to 1,200N. The friction force between the dresser and the ground is equal 840N.
a)compute the work done by force,the friction force,and the weight.Also compute the total work.
b)What is the mas of the dresser? What would be its mass and its weight on the surface of the Neptune where g=11,2m/s^2?
c)Compute the upward normal force on the dresser due to ground?
Explanation / Answer
a)
Work done by the force W1 = F*S*cos(theta) = 1200*10*cos(30) =10392.3 J
work done by the friction is W2 = f*S*cos(180) = -840*10 = -8400 N
work done by the weight is W3 = weight*S*cos(90) = 0 J
total work is W = W1+W2+W3
W = 10392.3-8400+0 = 1992.3 J
b) mass of dresser is m = Weight /g = 1470/9.8 =150 kg
mass on neptune is m = 150 kg
weight on neptune is mg = 150*11.2 = 1680 N
c) Normal force is N
writing tion of equation of motion normal to the surface of motion
N+T*sin(30) = mg
N =mg-T*sin(30)
N = 1470- (1200*0.5) =870 N
