Question

Olympic speed skates experience a centripetal acceleration of 3 g's as they round a 30.0m If a particular skater has a mass of 52.0 kg, how fast will she go around the turn? A whale has beached itself and is in need of rescue. A marine biologist brings a crane to the scene in hopes of lifting whale into a truck for a drive to a wildlife hospital. If the whale weighs 30,000 pounds, can be crane lift if it is capable of lifting a mass of 1.50 times 10^3 kg? A ball is thrown at an angle of 37 degree from vertical with an initial velocity of 19.6 m/s from a height of 1-25 m above a large, flat field. What is the instantaneous velocity of the ball 5.00 s later?

Explanation / Answer

(2)
Weight = 30000 lb = 13607.8 Kg
As the cable can lift = 1.5 * 10^3 = 1500 Kg
So, it is not possible for Crane to lift the whale !!

(3)
Horizontal velocity remains constant during motion, = 19.6 * sin(37) m/s
vh = 11.8 m/s

Vertical Velocity,
s = u*t + 1/2at^2
s = 19.6 * cos(37) * 5.0 - 1/2 * 9.8 * 5.0^2
s = - 44.23 m

As we see,  distance is greater than 1.25 m so ball will be on ground at t = 5.0 s
and instanetious velocity = 0
