Question
You are presented with 2 lenses and a mounting tube. Your tube is to assemble a refracting telescope. One lens has a diameter of 5 inches and a focal length of 1000 mm. The second lens has a diameter of 1/4^th and a focal length of 75 mm. How/Where should you place the lenses in the tube to maximize the magnification power of the telescope? Where will an image of a star/galaxy be focussed with respect to the smaller lens? M42, the Orion Nebula, is 60 are-minutes in diameter at its smallest. What size will it appear to be in the telescope you have created?Explanation / Answer
Solution.
Dear student:
case a)
This telescope we are going to build is a type of refracting telescope because it is build since combination of lenses to form an image.
The angular magnification of the telescope can be expressed as:
m = - f0 / f e and the only way yo get this quotient maximize is that f0 focal distance of the objective may be the one of 5 inches and the one who's going to act as an eyepiece is the one of 3/4 '' of diameter.
Hence, this arrengement will allow us to get the following angular magnification:
m = - 1000mm / 75mm = - 13.3333333333
For the solution of the following cases please post each one of them as a single question.
Thanks in advanced for your comprehension.
