Question

Problem 9-16. Object B weighs 100 lb and block A weighs 200lb The brown cable that passes over pulley C and under pulley D before tying off at fixed point E connects them. Determine the minimum value of the coefficient of static friction, mu_s, between block A and the surface upon which it sits so that the system is in equilibrium. Neglect the masses of the cable and the pulleys. Problem 9-26. Each uniform box has dimensions of 3 ft times 3 ft times 3 ft, the last dimension is directed into the page. The red box weighs 150 lb. The green box weighs 1001b. The purple box weighs 501b. The coefficient of friction between any two surfaces in contact is mu_s = 0.50. The force P acts horizontally at height 5.0 ft above the surface. Find the value of P for which motion impends.

Explanation / Answer

Tb = 100*g

2*Ta = Tb
Ta = Tb/2

Ta = us * 200 *g
(100*g)/2 = us * 200 * g
us = 0.25
Coefficient of friction necesary, us = 0.25

Moment about the surface should be zero in equilibrium.

p * 5.0 = 150*g*0.5 * 6.0 + 250 * g * 0.5 * 3.0
p = 165 lb
In Newton , P = 733.45 N
