Question

An object of height yo = +2 m is placed in front of a convex spherical mirror (focal length of size 3.5 m), at the various locations listed in parts a-c.

a.) When the object is placed 8 m away from the mirror, please find:
image distance =  ______ m
type/orientation of image = virtual and upright
magnification = 0.304
height of image = 0.608  m

b.) When the object is placed 5.25 m away from the mirror, please find:
image distance =  ______ m
type/orientation of image = virtual and upright
magnification =   0.396
height of image = 0.792 m

c.) When the object is placed 1.75 m away from the mirror, please find:
image distance = ______ m
type/orientation of image = virtual and upright
magnification =   0.667
height of image = 1.334 m

Explanation / Answer

Given :-

Mirror Equation:-

1/f=1/do + 1/di

yo = +2 m

Focal length f = 3.5 m

When object is placed 8m away from mirror do = 8m

So the distance of the image for the mirror is find

by mirror equation

di = (fdo) / (do-f) = -((3.5 * 8) / 8-(-3.5)) = - 2.4 m --------------------------------Answer

b) when the object is 5.25 m away from the mirror

di = (fdo) / (do-f) = -((3.5 * 5.25) / 5.25-(-3.5)) = -2.1 m -----------------------Answer

c) when the object is 1.75 m away from the mirror

di = (fdo) / (do-f) = -((3.5 * 1.75) / 1.75-(-3.5)) = -1.1666 m ---------------------------Answer
