Question

I need an answer for these questions! Thanks

A 14.0-foot-long, nearsighted python is stretched out perpendicular to a plane mirror, admiring its reflected image. If the greatest distance to which the snake can see clearly is 22.0 ft, how close must its head be to the mirror for it to see a clear image of its tail? You hold a small plane mirror 0.50 m in front of your eyes, as shown in the figure. The mirror is 0.37 m (h) high, and in it you see the image of a tall building behind you. If the building is 85 m (D) behind you, what vertical height of the building, H, can be seen in the mirror at any one time? If you move the mirror further away from your eyes, does your answer to part (a) increase, decrease, or stay the same? decrease stay the same increase

Explanation / Answer

A)2x = 22.0ft - 14ft

x = 8ft/2

4ft

B) since for reflection, angle of incidence = angle of reflection,
        from the diagram,
   in smaller triangle,
                              tan = 0.16m/0.5m = 0.32
   in larger triangle,
                            tan = h/10 = [H/2 - 0.16]/10 = 0.32

          so, H/2= 3.04m

          so,H = 6.08m

IT WILL BECOME SMALLER

The mirror gets proportionally smaller. The explanation is the similarity of triangles. The eye and the marks on the mirror form a triangle, while the eye and the two points on the image form another triangle. The two triangles are similar, with ratio 1/2, no matter the distance.
