Question

1/ For a standard production car, the highest road-tested acceleration ever reported occurred in 1993, when a Ford RS200 Evolution went from zero to 26.8 m/s (60 mi/h) in 2.757 s. Find the magnitude of the car's acceleration.

2/ A jetliner, traveling northward, is landing with a speed of 84.5 m/s. Once the jet touches down, it has 849 m of runway in which to reduce its speed to 13.6 m/s. Compute the average acceleration (magnitude and direction) of the plane during landing (take the direction of the plane's motion as positive).

3/ A meteoroid is speeding through the atmosphere, traveling east at 24.9 km/s while descending at 15.2 km/s. What is its speed, in km/s?

Explanation / Answer

(1) Here, U = 0, V = 26.8 m/s, t = 2.757 s

Now, V = U + a*t

=> 26.8 = 0 + a*2.757

=> a = 9.72 m/s^2.

(2) Initial speed, V1 = 84.5 m/s

Required speed, V2 = 13.6 m/s

Distance, d = 849 m

Now, V2^2 = V1^2 + 2*a*d

=> 13.6^2 = 84.5^2 + 2*a*849

=> a = - 6955.29 / 1698 = - 4.10 m/s^2

Negative sign shows that the direction of acceleration is opposite to the direction of plane.

(3) Speed = sqrt[24.9^2 + 15.2^2] = 29.17 km/s
