Question

Two charges +3 muC on the left and -4 muC on the right, are separated by a distance of 0.4 mm. What is the magnitude and direction of the Electric Force acting on the -4 muC charge? What is the magnitude and direction of the Electric Force acting on the -4 muC charge? What is the net force that acts on a charge of +5 muC, when placed halfway between the two charges? 2. A charge q_1 of -5 times 10^-9 C and a charge of q_2 of -2 times 10^-9 C are separated by a distance of 40 cm. Find a position where the net Electric Field strength is ZERO?

Explanation / Answer

a) magnitude = kq1q2/r^2

= (9 x 10^9 x 3 x 10^-6 x 4 x 10^-6) / (0.4 x 10^-3)^2

= 675000 N

direction - force will be attractive. hence direction will be to the right.

b) magnitude will be same and direction will be opposite.

direction - to the left.

c) F = [(9 x 10^9 x 5 x 10^-6 x 3 x 10^-6)/(0.2 x 10^-3)^2] + [(9 x 10^9 x 5 x 10^-6 x 4 x 10^-6)/(0.2 x 10^-3)^2]

= 7875000 N
