Question

In one of the versions of the "Giant Swing", the seat is connected to two cables

, one of which is horizontal (Figure 1) . The seat swings in a horizontal circle at a rate of 38.0 rev/min .

If the seat weighs 265 N and a 809-N person is sitting in it, find the tension in the horizontal cable.

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Find the tension in the inclined cable.

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Find the tension in the inclined cable.

Express your answer with the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

let w1 = 265 N

w2 = 809 N

angular speed, w = 38 rev/min

= 38*2*pi/60

= 3.98 rad/s

radius of orbit, r = 7.5 m

Let T1 is the tension in the inclined cable.

Apply, Fnety = 0

T1*cos(40) - (w1+w2) = 0

T1 = (w1+w2)/cos(40)

= (265 + 809)/cos(40)

= 1402 N

Let T2 is the tension in the horizontal cable.

Fnet = T1*sin(40) + T2

(m1+m2)*r*w^2 = T1*sin(40) + T2

T2 = (m1+m2)*r*w^2 - T1*sin(40)

= ((265 + 809)/9.8)*7.5*3.98^2 - 1402*sin(40)

= 12119 N
