After learning about the various types of memories as well as the multiple pathways that memories are stored, what are your thoughts about weaknesses in this approach. Specifically, what are some examples in which our brain might distort our memories?Explanation / Answer
Memory is essentially a reconstruction process, where we create them from various events and factors influencing and surrounding it.
We can imagine an event to have clearly occured when it did not occur in the first place, and even feel it clearly.
Errors occur when people falsely recall an item that is conceptually related to an item that they did encounter previously:
people fail to recollect specific details of an experience and instead remember general information or the gist of what happened.
Errors also occur when people falsely recall or recognize a novel item that is an associate of previously studied items.
Another example is that even after an event, certain informations provided may change the memory of the event.
Emotions also influence memory by distorting or changing them.
Hence, we can see that there are a variety of factor that contribute to the weaknesses in memory.
