Question
A 6 kg block is initially at rest 5 m from the base of a 10 kg frictionless ramp. The ramp is a right triangle with height 4 m and base length of 3 m. It sits on level ground but the ground is itself frictionless and there is nothing securing the ramp.
>Describe the key physics concepts you would employ to analyze the scenario
>Sketch two different types of diagrams that help you analyze the situation and label important physical locations times and other scenario
>Describe two unknowns related to the physical scenario that you could solve for by analyzing the given information
>Solve for one of the quantities above as well as on suggested in the scenario
Explanation / Answer
Suppose block is given a velocity , v
We have to determine the final velocity of block and ramp .
We have to calculate the height to which block rises on the ramp .
=> If initial velocity of block = 5 m/sec
=> Final velocity of block and ramp = 6 * 5/(6 + 10)
= 1.875 m/sec
=> Loss in potential energy = gain in kinetic energy
=> 6 * 9.8 * (4/5) * x = 1/2 * 6 * 1.875 * 1.875
=> x = 0.224 m
=> distance to which block travels on ramp = 0.224 m
