Question
You are required to design a 63.2km water pipeline to convey a discharge of 400L/s between two large reservoirs. The reservoirs have an elevation difference of 120m between their water levels. The pipe material will be UPVC and the internal diameters available from the preferred supplier are in 50mm increments starting from 50mm ID. There will be a range of fittings in the pipeline including four 90o elbows,two fully open swing check valves, one fully open gate valve and three 45o bends. Pipe entrance and exit will be flush with the walls of the reservoirs. What pipeline diameter will be required to convey the design discharge?
After selecting your pipe diameter, calculate the actual discharge that will occur. Use the Moody diagram and the Darcy-Weisbach friction equation to complete this design.
Submit a clearly marked copy of the Moody diagram with your submission.
Explanation / Answer
According to, Darcy-Weisbach friction equation
=> HL = f * L/D * V2/2g
where, HL = head loss factor
V = average flow velocity
f = Darcy-Weisbach friction factor
=> pipeline diameter will be required = 50 * 10-3 * 50 * 120/(63.2 * 1000 * sin45)
= 6.713 * 10-3 m
= 6.713 mm
=> the actual discharge that will occur = 400 * (3.14 * 3.356 * 3.356 * 10-6) * 120000
= 1697.52 L
