Question

Friday Homework Problem 2.603 pt(s) You are given 4 identical uncharged conducting marbles and a positively charged clear rod. You do the following: (i) Bring the rod near marble A, ground the marble, and then disconnect the ground before removing the rod (ii) Without loss of charge to the environment, bring marbles A and B into contact, then separate them (iii) Again without loss of charge to the environment, bring marble B into contact with marble C, then separate them (iv) Again without loss of charge to the environment, bring marble C into contact with marble D, then separate them. What are the final charges, if marble A was given a charge -Q in step (i)? Select One of the Following (b) QA QB QC 0, QD (c) QA C2/2, QB Q/4, QC Q/8, QD 9/16 (d) QA C2/2, QB Q/8 (e) QA C2/4, QB Q/8, Qc Q/16, QD Q/32

Explanation / Answer

2.6)

if initially marbel A had -ve charge. Then after putting it in contact with marbel B , B will also have -ve charge. But half in magnitude. So charge of B = -Q/2. And A will be remaining with charge -Q/2 as well.

Then putting it in contact with C will make C to have charge = -Q/4 and B will have remaining charge -Q/4.

Then again touching it with D will have charge = -Q/8. and C will have remaining charge -Q/8.

So option D is correct.
