Question

Using Microscope to look at the letter "e"

1. Explain why the ocular units for a letter “e” differs between 4X and the 10X objective but the dimension of a letter “e” remains the same.

2. How does the “ dimensions of the letter “e” ” obtained using the ocular units for the 4Xand 10X objective compare with a direct measurement of the letter "e"

Using Figure 1.1 and 1.2 for Exercise 1.2: Ocular and Stage Micrometers in your "Lab Report Sheet", explain why the ocular units for the letter "e" differs between 4X and the 10X objective but the dimension of the letter "e" remains the same. 3A. 3B. How does the "dimensions of the letter "e"" obtained using the ocular units for the 4X and 10X objective compare with the "direct measurement of the letter "e

Explanation / Answer

A typical micrometer scale is only 2 mm long. at least any one part of it should be etched with divisions of 0.01 mm or 10 micrometer.

If a stage micrometer is has 0.1 mm equivalent divisions, and if that scale is lined up with the ocular scale, then at 100X each micrometer is equal to 10 ocular divisions, which gives each ocular division equals to 10 micrometer.

this value will be 25 micrometer for 40X and 2.5 at 400 X and 1 micrometer at 1000X.

Thus, the ocular units for letter 'e' differs between 4X and 10X of objective lens. even though the real dimensions of the letter 'e' remains same, where as their ocular units differ fom 4x and 10X.

2. The actual measurement of letter 'e' is distinct in its dimensions. The ocular scale values will be keep decreasing with the increase in the magnification. but when it multiplied by the ocular scale value and magnification, with different magnification of ocular lenses also the same dimension of the letter 'e' is going to be obtained.

for example, for a 40 X magnification of ocular lens the ocular scale value is 25, and for a 400X magnification of ocular lens, the ocular scale value is 2.5 only.

40x25 will be equal to 400x 2.5.
