Question

Blue Moons. It is known that a lunation or lunar cycle is approximately 29.53 days, and that a year or solar cycle is 365.24 days Give an expression that gives the number of lunations in k years by using the floor (or round-down) function: x, e.g., T 3 If you count the number of lunations in k years for k 1,2...20, there is k is that? This is known as the Metonic cycle. If a Blue Moon is an extra moon in a year, how many years in a Metonic cycle will have a Blue Moon? If there is a Blue Moon this month, how long (on the average) do you wait until the next blue moon?

Explanation / Answer

Before answering this question let me introduce you with the concept of blue moon and Metonic cycle.

Normally there are twelve full moons in a year, but since our months contain 31 to 30 days some time we see 13 full moons in a single year. Therefore one extra full in the single month, this extra full moon is called the blue moon.

Metonic cycle: The Greek calendar is according to synodic lunar month period( time take the by moon to return to its original position after one cycle) which is 29.53 days. when moon completes its 235 synodic months it exactly equals to 19 years in our modern calendar( based on sun positioning). This 19-year cycle is called the Metonic cycle.

Answer 1: |235*K/19|=Number of Lunation in K years.

Answer 2: when k=19

Answer 3: 7 years ;

explanation if 12 full moons our in 1 tropical year then total full moons in 19 years( one Metonic cycle) is 228, but what we observe is that they are 235, it means extra seven full moons are Blue moons (235-228=7)

Answer 4: approximately 2.5 years
