Question

We are going to examine the expansion of a metal tube as it heats up. Why do materials expand? Explain in your own words. Why do we use a tube and pass steam through it to measure the linear coefficient of expansion? Why not use a torch to heat a metal bar? A square sheet of copper with an area of 85.40 cm^2 at room temperature (28.00 degree C) is heated up to 180.0 degree; what is the change in area of this copper sheet? What will be its new area? What is the uncertainty in f = a + b when a = 4.0 plusminus 0.1 m and b = 5.2 plusminus 0.2 m? What is the uncertainty in f = 4 a/(b/c)^5/2 when a = 2.5 plusminus 0.1, b = 3.4 plusminus 0.2 m and c = 1.20 plusminus 0.03 m?

Explanation / Answer

Question 1)

Whenever a material is heated with the help of an external source ,the kinetic energy of the molecules increases and they move about more . As a result , each atom and molecule will take up more space due to it's movement so the material will eventually expand

therefore materials expand when they are heated
