Question

q=150*10^-6C. Position 1 is the at the center of the rectangle. Position 2 is at the center of the top horizontal side. Charges in this 5cm*10cm rectangle are stationary.

1.Find E in position 1, magnitude and direction. If it's 0, explain why.

2.Find E in position 2, magnitude and direction.

3..A charge Q1=25nC is placed at position 2 &released with zero speed. At the instant of release, find the force(Mag & Direc) of the rectangle of charges on Q1.

Explanation / Answer

1) The electric field at the center of the rectangle is the superposition of individual fields. From the diagram it is clear that the diametrically opposite charges have same sign. So the field due to the diametrically opposite charges are in equal in magnitude but opposite in direction. So the net field at position 1 is zero i.e at the center of the rectangle.
