Question
First Cedar University Maple Willow Chestnut Milbrook TT gas station Restaurant Figure 2.1 x main streets mile apart Speed and Velocity 7. Consider your lunch time trip of Figure 2.1 again. During part A of the trip you drove at 15. m/s, spent 10. minutes at the gas station and then drove part B of your trip to the restaurant at 20. m/s. (a) What were your actual (instantaneous) speeds for parts A and B ofyour trip? (b) What were your instantaneous (actual) velocities for parts A and B of your trip? (c) What was your average speed for your entire trip to the restaurant? (d) What was your average velocity for your entire trip to the restaurant? (1 mi. 8/5 km).Explanation / Answer
Given
each streeth is 1/2 mile apart
part A speed is 15 m/s for a distance of 1 mile, and
part B speed is 20 m/s for a distance of 2.5 miles .
a) instantaneous speeds for parts A and B is 15 m/s and 20 m/s
b) instantaneous velocities are
in part A moving towards +x axis with speed is 15 m/s , so the velocity is 15 m/s
for part B moving towards - ve x axis , with 20 m/s is , velocity is -20 m/s
c) average speed for entire trip is
part A , time taken is t = d/v = 1600 m/15 m/s = 106.667 s
at gas station spent 10 min = 600 s
PArt B from gas station to restaurant
t = d/v = 2.5*1600/20 = 200 s
so total time taken for entire trip is t = 106.667+600+200 s = 906.667 s
average speed is = total distance / total time
= 3.5(8/5)*1000/906.667
= 6.2 m/s
d) average velocity is
V avg = total displacement / time
= Parta - PartB / time= university to restaurant / time taken
time taken from university to restaurant with 20 m/s is
t = d/v = 1.5*1600/20 = 120 s
= 1.5*1600 m/120 s
= 20 m/s
but moving along the -ve x direction so the average velocity is -20 m/s
