Question

An ice cube of volume 14.3 cm3 is initially at a temperature of -16.4°C. How much heat is required to convert this ice cube into steam? I've done this problem about a billion times and all my answers have been rejected as incorrect, they include: 40504J, 43513J, 39946J, 39895J, and 35610J. I know that I have to add up the heats and theoretically my answer should equal: heat needed to raise the temperature of the ice from -16.4 to 0 + heat required to turn the ice into water + heat needed to raise the temperature of the water from 0 to 100 + heat needed to turn the water into steam, but my answers keep being wrong. Thanks for any help!

Explanation / Answer

density of cube = 0.9167 g / cm^3

mass of cube = 14.3 x 0.9167 = 13.1 grams

Q1 = 13.1 x 2.108 x 16.4 = 452.883 J

Q2 = 13.1 x 333.55 = 4369.505 J

Q3 = 13.1 x 4.186 x 100 = 5483.66 J

Q4 = 13.1 x 2258 = 29579.8 J

Q = Q1 + Q2 + Q3 + Q4 = 39886 J ......Ans
