Question
An open container holds 0.550 kg of ice at - 15.0 C. The mass of the container can be ignored. Heat is supplied to the container at the constant rate of 800 J/min for 500 min. Part A After how many minutes does the ice start to melt? = 21.7 Part B After how many minutes, from the time when the heating is first started, does the temperature begin to rise above 0 ?=252 Part C Plot a curve showing the temperature as a function of the elapsed time. my graph is until 400 I JUST NEED PART C PLEASE HELP.WILL RATE. Thanks
Explanation / Answer
Part A:
the ice to start to melt, its temperature has to be brought to 0 C
Heat required = mass * specific heat * temperature difference
= 550 g * 2.03J/g.C * (15-0) C
= 16747.5 J
Time required = 16747.5 J * (1 min / 800 J)
= 20.93 ˜ 21 min also {check the value of specific heat}
Part B:
For The temperature will rise above 0 C only after all the ice has been converted to water
Heat required to melt the ice = mass * heat of fusion
= 550 g * 333.55 J/g
= 183452.5 J
For Time required = 183452.5 J * (1 min / 800 J)
= 229.31 min
Total time = 229.31 + 21 = 250.31 min --------answer----------
